The NBA Dunk Contest is a sacred part of NBA All-Star Weekend. It’s so hyped, so anticipated that sometimes it’s hard to top expectations.
That obviously wasn’t the case last year, as the duel between Orlando Magic big man Aaron Gordon and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Zach LaVine was better than we could have imagined.
So, too, do people have their favorite dunks. Dr. J from the free-throw line. Michael Jordan from the free-throw line. Dominique dominating. Dwight Howard as Superman. Nate Robinson as kryptonite. Every dunk from Vince Carter in 2000. In fact, when I was working at a different outlet a few years back, we ran a voting bracket leading up to the Dunk Contest to see what readers felt was the best slam of all-time from the competition.
Their final vote?
Vince Carter’s East Bay Funk Dunk -- that’s the one where he went between the legs -- beat out MJ’s free-throw dunk by a margin of 56% to 44%.
Now the NBA has released an epic video containing the best highlights from the history of the dunk contest for your viewing pleasure as we approach the 2017 NBA All-Star Weekend.
Enjoy.
