The Celtics haven’t chosen their opening-night starting point guard, but they’ve made a concrete plan for picking him.
Rajon Rondo is clearly Boston’s top point guard (and player), but he broke his hand, an injury expected to sideline him into the regular season. Still, Rondo believes there’s a chance he could be ready to face the Nets on Wednesday.
If Rondo can’t play, Celtics coach Brad Stevens was deliberating between rookie Marcus Smart and Evan Turner, a wing by trade.
Stevens has decided.

This is good news for the Celtics.
If Smart – even before his first game – couldn’t win the job over Turner playing out of position, that would bode poorly for the No. 6 pick. It obviously wouldn’t be a career ender for Smart or anything like that, just a negative indicator. Smart doesn’t have to immediately be a better player than Turner, but he should be a better point guard than Turner – and it seems now he is.
Of course, the best news for Boston would be getting Rondo back on the court.
