Knicks head coach Mike Woodson told reporters before Sunday’s game against the Heat that the team would sign Kenyon Martin to a second 10-day contract.
From Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork:Martin, who was signed to provide depth to the Knicks’ depleted front line, received a DNP on Friday against the Wizards and has played just five minutes in the first seven days of his 10-day contract.
But general manager Glen Grunwald said that he hopes Martin will be with the Knicks for the remainder of the season.
Martin again did not play in the Knicks’ loss to the Heat on Sunday, with Woodson preferring to go smaller to match up against Miami. Amar’e Stoudemire was the only big man outside the starting lineup to receive any minutes, and though he played well, Woodson couldn’t find a spot for him on the floor down the stretch with the game in the balance.
The plan all along was to give Martin the consecutive 10-day deals to have enough time to evaluate whether or not he can actually contribute for the team’s run into the postseason. After the second one expires, New York will have to sign him for the rest of the year or cut him loose.
