Landry Shamet was on a non-guaranteed contract but appeared to be a lock to make the Knicks roster after Donte DiVincenzo was sent to Minnesota to make the Karl-Anthony Towns trade work. However, the Knicks waived him after Shamet suffered a dislocated shoulder on a fluke preseason play and it was clear he would miss extended time.
Shamet is about to be back with the Knicks, who are going to re-sign him, reports Shams Charania of ESPN. Shamet had done what amounts to a rehab stint with the G-League’s Westchester Knicks last week, and is now about to rejoin the team. To make room for him on the roster (and to stay below the second apron of the luxury tax), the Knicks waived Matt Ryan.
Shamet adds depth Tom Thibodeau can trust and should boost what is already the second-best offense in the league. He is a six-year NBA veteran who has proven to be a solid rotation player and has shot 38.4% from 3 for his career. Shamet should get run behind starter Mikal Bridges.
Shamet could debut with the Knicks on Christmas Day when they host Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
