Kevin Love will start doing ‘select basketball activities’

Kevin Love has only played in four games this season for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The 30-year old power forward has been out for much of the year thanks to toe surgery, and the team has not expected Love back until late January.

On Thursday night, the Cavaliers released a status update on Love that didn’t give us much in the way of information. But Love is a potential trade piece, more for the summer than for Feb. 7, and so his status is at least something to monitor.

The update according to Cleveland is that Love will start with some “select basketball activities”, whatever that means.

In consultation with the Cavaliers’ medical team and Head Team Physician Dr. James Rosneck with Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, Love will now progress with select basketball activities as directed by the Cavaliers’ medical team and continue to advance his therapy and strength and conditioning program. A return to play timeline will be established as progression through this phase of his rehabilitation is complete.

Love signed a 4-year, $120 million deal with Cleveland on July 24 but that doesn’t mean he’s not on the block. What’s more likely is that the Cavaliers didn’t want to lose him as an asset the same season they lost LeBron James, and they’re betting on someone taking a chance on him moving forward despite the back end of his deal perhaps becoming unpallatable.

For now, we’re still waiting for Love to get back in uniform. That’s Step 1, and it looks like we’re a little way off from that just yet.
