Kevin Durant suffered a Jones fracture in his right foot over the weekend, which led to speculation that the reigning NBA MVP would miss six to eight weeks. On Thursday, Durant underwent surgery to repair the injury, the team announced in a press release. He will be re-evaluated in six weeks.
The six-week timetable would have Durant’s next evaluation on November 27, which means he will miss, at a minimum, the first 16 games of the Thunder’s regular season, including matchups with the Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies, and Golden State Warriors. And that’s if he makes quick progress in his recovery.
More likely, he will have to miss more time, even spilling into December. Bad news for the Thunder, who will have to figure out how to compete in the loaded Western Conference without him.
