Heat sign Chris ‘Birdman’ Andersen to a 10-day contract

The Heat have the best record in the Eastern Conference, yet they haven’t been anywhere near invincible this season. In the games they’ve lost, Miami has been crushed on the boards, and it’s been an ongoing concern throughout the season.

The team took action to improve in that category by signing Chris Andersen to a 10-day contract on Sunday.

The Heat rank 26th in rebound rate, an advanced statistic that measures the percentage of missed shots a team rebounds.

Andersen played 10 NBA seasons, most recently with the Denver Nuggets in 2011-12. He appeared in 32 games for them, while averaging 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocked shots in 15.2 minutes of action.

He was waived by the Nuggets under the amnesty provision of the new collective bargaining agreement, which allowed the team to get the remainder of his two-year, $9.3 million contract off the books.
