Derek Fisher has played in 434 consecutive NBA regular season games — the longest such streak in the NBA.
That is 5.3 seasons without a turned ankle or sore back keeping him out of the starting rotation. The streak had belonged to Portland’s Andre Miller at 632 until he sat out due to a suspension after a flagrant foul on Blake Griffin Sunday.
Fisher, ever the diplomat, struck a bigger picture tone when asked about the streak.
“It’s just symbolic of the decision I think a lot of people are faced with on a daily basis,” Fisher said in the Lakers locker room. “There are good days and bad days, but the most important thing is when you wake up the next morning, you’re blessed to see the next day. You strap on the shows and you go to work.”
The all-time NBA record is not one Fisher is likely to catch — former Laker A.C. Green played in 1,192 consecutive regular season games. That’s 14.5 seasons. Even Derrick Fisher isn’t going to play that long.
