There are a lot of reasons Charlotte changing its nickname from Bobcats to Hornets is great.

It’s a better nickname. It better fits the city. The colors are better.

Better, better, better.

Here’s one more – huge – reason to support the change.

Paul Lukas of UniWatch:

This means, retroactively, the New Orleans Pelicans were an expansion franchise that began play in 2002. From 1988, their history belongs to the Charlotte Hornets who were formerly known as the Bobcats.

This is a much more logical and satisfying reflection of NBA history and records.

The Cleveland Browns set a great precedent with this in the NFL. Any records of the original team now belong to the expansion franchise of the same name that began play in 1999 rather than the Baltimore Ravens, who moved from Cleveland.

Kudos to the Pelicans for following suit and helping to make this happen. The NBA and our sense of history is better for it.
