Marcus Douthit, the Lakers’ second-round pick, will play in Belgium this season.
It had earlier appeared that Douthit would get a guaranteed contract from the Lakers, but after he had some legal troubles and Chris Mihm was acquired, the team didn’t really want him on the roster this year. He’ll probably get a chance to win a spot next summer.
  • Marcus Douthit, the Lakers’ second-round pick, was charged Thursday with taking part in a Rhode Island identity theft and embezzlement scheme that allegedly filed more than $160,000 in false slip-and-fall and car accident claims.
Douthit was indicted by a statewide grand jury on one count of conspiracy to commit embezzlement and embezzlement over $100. He was alleged to have received $6,500 from faking a car accident in December 2001 and filing a false insurance claim. Douthit’s agent, Charles Bonsignore, said his client is innocent and that the accused ringleaders of the scam, James Cook and Kristen Cook, obtained Douthit’s social security number after befriending him and used it to file the claim without his knowledge.
  • Marcus Douthit was arraigned Thursday in Rhode Island and recommended for an adult diversion program that would leave him with no criminal record upon completion.
It appears that the akers may get Douthit to camp on time. The second-round pick was alleged to have staged a car accident in December 2001, when he was playing college basketball at Providence, filed a false insurance claim and deposited $6,500 from the settlement in a bank account. Douthit said he was the unwitting victim of the identity theft and embezzlement scheme.
