Marcelo Huertas scored a team-high 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting during Brazil’s upset win over Team Spain on Tuesday, adding seven assists, four boards and one 3-pointer in 31 minutes.
This is about as good as it gets for Huertas, who did not turn over the ball once during his 31 minutes on the court, but don’t expect him to come anywhere near this kind of production as the third-string point guard for the Lakers this upcoming season.
  • LAL Point Guard #4
The Lakers have extended a qualifying offer to Marcelo Huertas.
The 33 year old played well in his reserve role with the Lakers last season, but he’s not a guy that will be a worthwhile asset in most leagues. The Lakers will be able to match any offer he receives on the open market, but it would be surprising to see that number go too far over the veteran’s minimum.

    Lakers sign G Marcelo Huertas.
The Lakers and Huertas agreed to the deal four weeks ago, but it became official today. Huertas was a treat to watch in his 53 games during his rookie season, but don’t expect the 33-year-old point guard to be in the rotation to start the 2016-17 season.
  • MIL Point Guard #0
Xavier Munford is playing for the Lakers summer league team.
Munford got into 14 regular season games with Memphis last season, but he’s trying to play his way back onto the NBA radar with the Lakers. Given Los Angeles has D’Angelo Russell, Jose Calderon and Marcelo Huertas at the point guard position, Munford is likely auditioning for a spot on a different team.
  • LAL Point Guard #4
The Lakers will re-sign Marcelo Huertas on a two-year deal.
He’s going to be the third or fourth point guard now that Jose Calderon is in the mix -- Lou Williams will likely play more shooting guard. Huertas was a lot of fun to watch, but he’s not close to having fantasy value while the Lakers are even remotely healthy.
  • LAL Point Guard #4
Marcelo Huertas finished Brazil’s 111-107 loss to Argentina with 14 points, three assists and one turnover on 5-of-11 from the field.
Huertas is not expected to be a part of the Lakers’ rotation now that Jose Calderon is in the fold, but he’s a solid locker room guy on a young team and can undeniably help Los Angeles develop its backcourt of the future both on and off the court.
  • LAL Point Guard #4
Lakers coach Luke Walton said that Marcelo Huertas and Jose Calderon are battling for the backup point guard spot behind D’Angelo Russell.
“That’s going to be a tough call,” Walton said. “I’m sure throughout the season we’ll lean on different ones at different times depending on what we need. But I feel completely confident with either one of them on the floor running the team.” So long as Russell remains healthy, neither Huertas nor Calderon will be worth deploying in any fantasy format. For what it’s worth, Walton called Huertas “probably” the team’s best playmaker.
  • DET Point Guard #81
Jose Calderon is battling Marcelo Huertas for the backup point guard position behind D’Angelo Russell.
“I’m sure throughout the season we’ll lean on different ones at different times depending on what we need,” Luke Walton said. “But I feel completely confident with either one of them on the floor running the team.” For what it’s worth, Walton called Calderon a “phenomenal shooter and one of the best shooters on our team,” but also added that “he’s a little older,” an indication that he’ll be careful with how much playing time the veteran receives. Regardless of the decision, neither backup PG will have fantasy value with D-Lo running the show.
  • NBA Shooting Guard #6
Luke Walton said that veteran guard Lou Williams has demonstrated a “playmaking presence” during informal practices.
Williams is expected to spend most if not all of his minutes at shooting guard this season with both Jose Calderon and Marcelo Huertas behind D’Angelo Russell at the point—not to mention Jordan Clarkson can slide over there—but any additional playmaking is a welcomed sight for a Lakers team that sorely lacked it last year. Despite what should be a stable role in Walton’s rotation, Lou Will isn’t a very attractive fantasy target in any format.
  • LAL Point Guard #4
Marcelo Huertas will start against the Rockets on Wednesday.
He played a season-high 18 minutes off the bench on Monday night and could get over 20 tonight. Huertas has made just 29.2 percent from the field on the season, but his 2.7 dimes in 9.8 minutes per outing could be noteworthy. There’s no need to add him almost anywhere and he remains a very risky DFS punt.
