It may just be a sign on the side of a building, but it’s also the sign that a new chapter has begun at Hendrick Motorsports.
HMS has changed the signage in multiple locations at its Concord, North Carolina, campus to reflect the numbers that will be on the four cars it will run in 2018.
Gone is the No. 5, which Hendrick fielded in the Cup Series from its inception in 1984 with Geoffrey Bodine until 2017 with Kasey Kahne. Kahne has departed as well, as he’ll drive the No. 95 for Leavine Family Racing.
In its place is the No. 9, which will be driven by Chase Elliott after he spent the last two season driving the No. 24.
The No. 24 will be taken over by rookie William Byron, who is fresh off his Xfinity Series title with JR Motorsports.
