Michael Waltrip Racing confirmed Wednesday to NASCAR Talk that Brett Moffitt will drive the team’s No. 55 Sprint Cup car next weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. No decision has been made on who will drive the car after that.
The team needs a replacement after Brian Vickers suffered a recurrence of blood clots three days before the March 22 race at Auto Club Speedway. Vickers said he’ll be on blood thinners at least three months. He cannot race while on that medication.
Moffitt has driven in place of Vickers since, placing 22nd at Auto Club Speedway and 28th last weekend at Martinsville Speedway.
Vickers missed the opening two races of the season as he recovered from December heart surgery. Moffitt drove for Vickers at Atlanta and finished eighth. Moffitt also drove two races in the No. 34 car for Front Row Motorsports, placing 37th at Las Vegas and 32nd at Phoenix. He is 30th in the points despite missing one race this season (he wasn’t entered for the Daytona 500).
