SuperMotocross 450 countdown: No. 7, Jason Anderson and the ticking clock

Jason Anderson continues to look for the same magic that defined his 2018 Monster Energy Supercross season when he held off challenges by Marvin Musquin and Eli Tomac to win his first 450 professional championship. It is only by this comparison that the last six seasons have seemed disappointing for El Hombre.

Since 2018, Anderson has finished in the top five in points in six championships and was nine points shy of getting a second Supercross title in 2022. He won seven races that season, the same number as the champion Eli Tomac, and closed out the season with four consecutive victories.

Tomac had a large enough buffer entering the finale in Salt Lake City that he could skip the race but the real difference maker was a 21-place result for Anderson in Detroit in Round 10. Tomac won that race.

Anderson finished third in Pro Motocross points that same year.

Behind every fast riders is a mechanic whose attention to detail gives him the confidence to push the limit of his bike.

The Detroit DNF came at a time when Tomac was charging hard to secure five consecutive wins, and it was one of three results outside the top five during Tomac’s sweep.

Anderson needed consistency and he largely achieved that in 2024 with 26 top-10s in 30 races in the combined SuperMotocross League schedules.

Unfortunately, only 17 of the 26 top-10s were in the top five and in a season without a victory, Anderson was not in serious contention for any of the three championships. Again, the relative success of his 2024 season depends on perspective. Anderson finished fifth in both Supercross and Pro Motocross points. He was disappointed, but much less than the majority of the field.

Ken Roczen finished second in all three rounds of the 2023 SMX playoffs but missed his opportunity to improve last year because of injury.

There were certainly highlights. Anderson got off to a strong start with a second-place finish in the season opener at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. He struggled in the muddy conditions of San Francisco the following week and then strung four top-fives together. That streak culminated with his second runner-up finish of the season in Glendale, Arizona.

The clock is ticking. SuperMotocross riders are in much better shape overall now than ten years ago, at least regarding their longevity in the sport, but there is a limit to how much stress a body can take. Anderson will turn 32 early in the Supercross season, and last year’s hot Motocross campaign took a toll on him.

Justin Cooper missed only one feature in his rookie 450 season and had a top-10 ratio of 90 percent.

Even with those challenges, Anderson was one of a handful of riders to compete in every round. He missed the SuperMotocross Playoff feature at zMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina, because of a practice crash, and the effects of that rippled through his next two starts. Anderson finished eighth in Round 2 at Texas Motor Speedway and 13th at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Even with those modest results, Anderson finished 10th in points. Rest assured: He wants to finish much better in 2025.
