Zach Neto (shoulder) has started throwing and is ahead of schedule in his rehab process.
Neto had shoulder surgery back in November, and the details of his recovery have been vague. Even now, the Angels have said he’s throwing sooner than they anticipated but “there is still no firm timetable for him.” While throwing is obviously a good sign, he’s not yet throwing at full speed. Neto will also need to strengthen his shoulder enough to swing and then have to get his timing back before the Angels will even put him into a game. He could still be out for multiple months at this point.

Zach Neto said that he got “good news” from doctors Tuesday following a checkup on his surgically repaired shoulder.
Neto didn’t elaborate on exactly what that good news was, but he did say he was still unsure of his status for Opening Day. Neto could be a bargain pick this spring if his shoulder proves sound; he’d be going far higher in drafts if not for the issues that led to his November surgery.
  • LAA Second Baseman
The Athletic’s Sam Blum reported that “nothing is stopping the always-aggressive Angels from giving [Christian Moore] a shot” this spring.
Blum noted that the Angels were planning to call up Moore in September last season before he suffered a meniscus injury. The 22-year-old, who was the eighth overall pick in last year’s draft, hit .347/.400/.584 in 25 minor league games last season with six home runs and two steals. With Anthony Rendon now transitioning to a bench role, the Angels could slot Luis Rengifo in at third base and let Moore battle Kevin Newman for the starting second base job. Moore’s chances of making the Opening Day roster may also be improved by shortstop Zach Neto (shoulder) likely starting the year on the IL. That would mean the Angels could play Newman at shortstop and give Moore the second base job. This will certainly be a situation to monitor this spring.

Angels signed SS Tim Anderson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Well, the Angels certainly have a type. The 31-year-old Anderson saw his production fall off a cliff in 2023 and, unfortunately, 2024 was no better as he posted a .214/.237/.226 line in 241 plate appearances with the Marlins. After being a perennial .300 hitter with 15/15 upside, Anderson has not hit over .245 in either of the last two seasons and has just one home run and 17 steals in 765 plate appearances. With Zach Neto potentially starting the year on the IL as he recovers from off-season surgery, there is a chance for Anderson to earn a starting job for a few weeks, but he will need to show far more production than he has over the last two seasons.

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reports Gleyber Torres is drawing interest from the Blue Jays and Angels.
The Blue Jays would be the preferred landing spot for fantasy purposes since it would keep Torres in the hitter-friendly AL East, but he would make a ton of sense for Los Angeles, enabling them to move Luis Rengifo around the diamond. The big question here is whether signing Torres would be a bigger statement about the health of shortstop Zach Neto heading into next year in the wake of his offseason shoulder surgery.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian didn’t provide an update at the Winter Meetings regarding Zach Neto (shoulder).
The lack of transparency from the Angels regarding the exact nature of the offseason shoulder surgery Neto underwent last month, and exactly how much time he’s likely to miss heading into next season, is downright bizarre. The 23-year-old shortstop was one of last season’s biggest fantasy breakouts, finishing with 23 homers and 30 steals in 155 contests. At this point, it’s challenging to confidently rank Neto among the top 10 options at the position heading into next season, and we’re inclined to push him back into the SS15 range until we get some much-needed clarity on his status.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian told reporters that Zach Neto underwent shoulder surgery this week.
Neto missed most of the end of the season while dealing with shoulder issues, and the 23-year-old shortstop will go under the knife after he wasn’t able to fix the issue through rehab. Minasian wasn’t sure if Neto would need to miss time to begin the year, so it’s something to monitor for those who are considering Neto as a helper up the middle on their fantasy team.

Zach Neto (shoulder) is not in the starting lineup for the Angels on Saturday against the Rangers.
Neto is dealing with a shoulder injury, and the hope from Ron Washington was that he could return for the final two games. The best will now be the final one. Nolan Schanuel is also out for the Angels while dealing with a knee bruise. Jack Lopez is playing shortstop and Niko Kavadas is playing first base.

Angels manager Ron Washington told reporters SS Zach Neto won’t play on Friday, but might on Saturday and Sunday.
Neto left Thursday afternoon’s game against the White Sox with a shoulder injury. He was removed from the game after sliding into second base. Washington’s timetable for Neto’s return merely left the door open for a weekend return, making Neto a difficult start in leagues with mid-week lineup changes.

Zach Neto left the game on Thursday with a shoulder injury.
Neto hurt his shoulder sliding into second base and was removed from the game. There is no indication of how serious the injury is, but with just three games left in the season, the injury may mean the end of 2024 for Neto. We’ll update as more information is reported.
