Mariners signed RHP Yunior Marte to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Marte, 29, joins Seattle after being outrighted by the Phillies off their roster at the conclusion of the season. The 29-year-old struggled to a 6.92 ERA in his time with Philadelphia over 23 appearances, and just adds depth to the Seattle staff at this stage of his career.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #49
Phillies sent LHP Kolby Allard, INF Rodolfo Castro and RHP’s Yunior Marte, Luis F. Ortiz and Freddy Tarnok outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
All five wound up electing free agency and will test the open market rather than accept outright assignments to remain with the Phillies. The most notable name here is Allard, who made seven appearances (four starts) last year for Philadelphia. The trio of Marte, Ortiz and Tarnok figure to be able to latch on elsewhere as extra relief depth. Castro underwent surgery back in August to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #43
Phillies optioned RHP Yunior Marte to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies needed to free up a spot on their active roster with Jose Alvarado returning from the restricted list and Marte drew the short straw this time around. The 29-year-old hurler holds a 6.92 ERA, 1.89 WHIP and a 23/15 K/BB ratio over 26 innings with the Phillies on the season.

  • PHI Relief Pitcher #43
Phillies optioned RHP Yunior Marte to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Marte is sent down to make room for Taijuan Walker with Walker coming off the injured list for a start versus the Marlins. Marte will provide depth for the Philadelphia staff at the Triple-A level, and likely will be back before the season comes to a close.

Marte is back in the big leagues ahead of Saturday’s game against the Pirates. He’s posted a solid 3.31 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 15/6 K/BB ratio across 16 1/3 innings (15 appearances) this season for the Phillies.

  • PHI Relief Pitcher #43
Phillies recalled RHP Yunior Marte from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Marte was activated off the IL on Tuesday and optioned to Triple-A, but it will be a short stay as he makes his way back to the MLB roster to take the place of Spencer Turnbull, who was placed on the 15-day IL. Marte will remain with the Phillies until they need a fifth starter and then likely head back to Triple-A.
  • PHI Starting Pitcher #22
Phillies placed RHP Spencer Turnbull on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain.
Turnbull was removed from his start on Wednesday after pitching just three innings; however, the right-hander doesn’t think the injury is anything serious. He wanted to tell the Phillies as soon as he felt anything to make sure he didn’t aggravate the soreness he was feeling. There is no timeline yet for his recovery, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Michael Mercado would be the number five starter if Turnbull had to miss time. For now, reliever Yunior Marte was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Turnbull’s spot on the roster.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #43

Marte will remain stationed in the minors as extra relief depth for Philadelphia after wrapping up an extended rehab assignment. The 29-year-old righty hit the injured list back in early May with right shoulder inflammation.
