Independent journalist Francys Romero reports that more than five major league teams have expressed interest in free agent catcher Yasmani Grandal.
Grandal, once considered among the elite offensive performers at the catcher position, slashed just .228/.304/.400 with nine homers, 27 RBI and a 46/24 K/BB ratio in 243 plate appearances with the Pirates during the 2024 campaign. He just turned 36-years-old and his days of grading out as a major asset behind the plate have faded away. He may still wind up with a backup gig someplace, but Grandal’s days of fantasy relevancy are in the rearview mirror.

Yasmani Grandal went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI, and three runs scored in a 9-4 win against the Yankees on Saturday.
Grandal put the Pirates on the board with a solo homer off Luis Gil in the second inning. He later knocked a base hit to lead off the fifth and scored on a two-run shot by Billy Cook. Grandal knocked a third hit in the ninth to drive in a run and scored a third time on a home run by Nick Yorke. The 35-year-old backstop hit .228/.304/.400 with nine homers and 27 RBI across 243 plate appearances.

Yasmani Grandal went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run against the Cardinals on Thursday.

Pirates activated C Joey Bart from the 10-day injured list.
Henry Davis is sticking around, so the Pirates will divvy up playing time behind the plate three ways. That figures to be bad news for Yasmani Grandal, particularly now that the Pirates are out of the race and better off taking a look at their younger players. Bart should get more of the catcher starts than anyone else, and he and Davis could DH on occasion.

Pirates placed C Joey Bart on the IL with a hamstring strain.
We knew this was coming after Bart had to leave Sunday’s game early, but it’s a brutal blow for the 27-year-old who had been hitting .302 in 30 games since the All-Star break with six home runs, 19 RBI, and 20 runs. Hamstring injuries have a tendency to linger, so it’s unclear when Bart will return, but Henry Davis was called up to take his place on the active roster and split catching duties with Yasmani Grandal.

Yasmani Grandal went 1-for-4 with a game-winning two-run homer in a 4-3 win over the Reds on Sunday.
Grandal launched a 393-foot big fly off Alexis Diaz with one out in the ninth inning to carry the Pirates to victory. The veteran is now slashing .208/.253/.371 on the season with seven home runs and 23 RBI. Joey Bart also left this game early with an apparent injury, which could open up more playing time for Grandal in the near future.

Joey Bart is not in the Pirates’ starting lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Mariners in Seattle.
The 27-year-old has been seeing fairly regular action in the designated hitter slot when he’s not behind the plate for the Pirates, but he’ll get a full night off against Logan Gilbert on Friday evening in Pittsburgh. Yasmani Grandal will do the catching for the Bucs and bat eighth while Andrew McCutchen serves as the team’s designated hitter.

Yasmani Grandal hit a solo homer in the Pirates’ win over the Astros on Monday.
Grandal got the Pirates on the board in the sixth with a solo shot in the sixth inning. The 35-year-old has four homers on the season, and is a semblance of the hitter he was a few years ago as seen in his .184/.221/.319 slash.

Yasmani Grandal went 1-for-5 with a pair of RBI on Friday in his return to the Pirates’ lineup.
Grandal wound up missing a pair of contests following an early exit from Tuesday’s showdown against the Giants with left groin discomfort. The 35-year-old veteran will continue splitting the catching duties with Joey Bart for now.

Yasmani Grandal was removed from Tuesday’s game against the Giants with left groin discomfort.
Let’s check in on Henry Davis, folks. Grandal could wind up hitting the injured list in the coming days, if the issue winds up being serious. There should be an update on his status at some point prior to Wednesday’s contest.
