The 27-year-old backstop split his 2022 season between Double-A Birmingham and Triple-A Charlotte, hitting .268/.322/.362 with four homers and 32 RBI in 311 plate appearances. He’ll likely garner an invitation to big league camp but doesn’t appear to have a realistic shot at cracking the club’s Opening Day roster.

The 24-year-old backstop spent the first seven seasons of his professional career in the Royals’ organization. A career .272/.334/.407 hitter in the minors, Fernandez adds organizational depth behind the plate.
