Miley will receive a $1.5 million buyout and is now a free agent. He’s recovering from Tommy John surgery that will keep him sidelined for at least the first few months of the 2025 season. Miley turns 38 in November so it’s fair to wonder if he’ll even continue playing. He was 9-4 with a 3.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 23 starts for the Brewers in 2023, but went down with an elbow injury after only two starts in 2024. Miley has won 108 games with a 4.07 ERA in his 14-year career. He made the All-Star team and was second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2012.

Miley landed on the injured list on Monday due to inflammation in his left elbow. We now know that the situation is much more dire. He’ll miss the remainder of the 2024 season — and likely the first few months of the 2025 campaign — while recovering. That is if he even decides to continue his playing career. It’s a brutal blow for the 37-year-old southpaw.

Another pitcher down for the Brewers. Miley allowed four runs (three earned) in three innings against the Padres last time out while also getting hit in the knee by a 108 mph comebacker. However, it’s the elbow that’s ailing him. We should know more specifics in the coming days. Tobias Myers is on his way up from Triple-A.

Miley limited Cincinnati’s solid lineup to just one run on one hit and a pair of walks, but also failed to record a strikeout in his season debut. Given his lack of strikeout upside, he’s unlikely to provide much of an impact for fantasy managers outside of extremely deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats. He’ll face the Padres on Monday in his next outing.

The 37-year-old will make his season debut against the Reds on Wednesday. Fantasy managers could stash him and see how he performs in his first outing before putting him in lineups, but his health is a big question mark at this point in his career.

Miley has been dealing with an ongoing shoulder issue throughout spring training and will need some extra time to ramp up before making his season debut.

Miley has not yet pitched this spring and will get the opportunity for three up-downs on Wednesday, which is the equivalent of three innings. After that, if it goes well, he’ll most likely go to Triple-A Nashville for a couple of rehab starts and could be back in the Brewers’ rotation by the end of April.
