Orioles optioned RHP Kyle Gibson to Triple-A Norfolk; reassigned INF Emmanuel Rivera, INF Luis Vázquez, INF Vimael Machín and C Maverick Handley to minor league camp.
Gibson will head to the minors to continue ramping up his throwing program after signing a one-year, $5.25 million contract last week to bolster Baltimore’s injury-depleted rotation. The 37-year-old veteran figures to be ready to make his season debut at some point in April.
  • BAL Shortstop #71
Vimael Machin was 3-for-3 with a homer and a double Sunday in the Orioles’ 7-3 takedown of the Phillies.
Machin’s 351-foot homer was not his hardest-hit ball of the day. That, instead, was a 106.7 mph double in the sixth inning. The journeyman infielder last played in the majors with the A’s in 2022, and he’s a career .208/.290/.261 hitter with one homer in 361 plate appearances. It would likely take Jorge Mateo opening on IL and another infielder getting hurt for Machin to make the Orioles out of camp.
  • BAL Shortstop #39
Orioles signed INF Vimael Machín to a minor league contract.
Machín spent the last two seasons in the independent Mexican League and last appeared in the majors during the 2022 campaign when he got into a career-high 73 contests for the Athletics. The 31-year-old is merely an emergency depth addition for the Orioles, especially given their plethora of young infielders ready to arrive in the big leagues.
  • BAL Shortstop #71
    Phillies released INF Vimael Machín.
Machín signed a minor league contract with the Phillies in January and didn’t end up making it to the majors in Philadelphia. The 29-year-old infielder has been cut loose after 52 games this season for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He got into a career-high 73 games last year for the Athletics.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Phillies reassigned INF Vimael Machín, RHP Jake Jewell, and Cs Vito Friscia and Cody Roberts to minor league camp.
No surprises in this group of cuts. Machín, 29, latched on with a minor league deal this offseason after spending a bunch of time with the Athletics last year. He fits more as organizational depth with a contender.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Phillies signed INF Vimael Machín to a minor league contract.
Machín was jettisoned from the Athletics’ 40-man roster earlier this offseason and opted to test the free agent waters rather than accept an outright assignment. The 29-year-old infielder batted .220/.300/.287 with one homer and one steal in 253 plate appearances last season for Oakland. He’s merely an emergency organizational depth filler at this stage of his career.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Vimael Machin has elected free agency.
The 29-year-old had been sent outright to Triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the week, but he refused that assignment and will test the free agent market instead. Machin has hit just .208/.290/.261 in 361 career plate appearances at the big league level.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Athletics sent INF Vimael Machín outright to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Machín went unclaimed on waivers last week after being designated for assignment and will remain with the Athletics as organizational infield depth. The 29-year-old infielder holds a lackluster .551 OPS in 112 games at the big league level over the last three years.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Athletics designated INF Vimael Machín for assignment.
A little housekeeping here after the A’s just completed a three-team, nine-player trade with the Braves and Brewers. Machín, 29, carries a brutal .208/.290/.261 bating line in 112 games (361 plate appearances) at the MLB level.

  • BAL Shortstop #71
Athletics placed INF Vimael Machín on the paternity leave list.
Machín has left the Athletics to return to Puerto Rico to be with his wife for the birth of their child and will miss the team’s final three games of the regular season. The versatile 29-year-old infielder finishes the year with a pedestrian .220/.300/.287 batting line with one home run and one steal across 253 plate appearances.
