USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Cubs and RHP Lance Lynn “have entered contract negotiations” on a one-year deal.
It remains to be seen if the deal gets finalized, but it appears to be close. Lynn isn’t a bad choice to fill out an MLB rotation since he registered a 3.84 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and a 109/44 K/BB ratio over 117 1/3 innings in 23 starts with the Cardinals in 2024. He will certainly not be ready for Opening Day if the Cubs sign him two weeks before the season starts, but he could push Colin Rea or Jordan Wicks for the fifth spot in the rotation by the end of April.
  • FA Second Baseman #6
11-year MLB veteran Jace Peterson has taken a job in player development with the Brewers.
Peterson never announced his retirement, but this would seem to be the end of the 34-year-old. He hit .226/.317/.335 with 42 homers over 887 big-league games with the Padres, Braves, Yankees, Blue Jays, Brewers, A’s and D-backs. Baseball-reference puts him at 3.3 WAR in his three seasons with the Brewers and -0.5 WAR for the rest of his career.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #33
Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet reports that the Blue Jays have re-signed RHP Dillon Tate to a one-year deal.
Tate was non-tendered by the Blue Jays in November after compiling a 4.66 ERA and 27/12 K/BB over 36 2/3 innings with Toronto and Baltimore. The 30-year-old will be a middle-innings option, and the signing likely has at least something to do with the potential loss of Erik Swanson (elbow) to begin the 2025 campaign.
  • FA Starting Pitcher #65
Ari Alexander of KRPC reports that the Tigers are signing right-hander José Urquidy.
The terms of the deal aren’t available just yet. Urquidy joins the Tigers after spending his entire career with the Astros, and he’s expected to miss most — if not all — of 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old has had success at the highest level, and could be a helper for the Detroit rotation in 2026.
  • FA Shortstop #11
Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the Padres are signing infielder Jose Iglesias.
Murray reports that it’s a minor-league deal that includes an invitation to spring training. The 35-year-old will get $3 million if in the majors, with another $1 million possible in incentives according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Iglesias will need to be added to the 40-man roster, but his ability to play a few positions in the infield and handle left-handed pitching gives him a good shot of winning a job with the Padres to open 2025.

    Mariners released RHP Dauris Valdez.
Valdez was signed to a minor league contract in December, but Seattle must not have liked what they saw from the 29-year-old over the spring session. He’s now free to join a new organzation.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #67
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the Nationals are re-signing Kyle Finnegan to a one-year, $6 million contract.
Finnegan was non-tendered back in November by the Nationals on the heels of an All-Star campaign when he recorded 38 saves along with a strong 3.68 ERA. It likely worked out in the club’s favor since Finnegan could have earned up to $9 million in arbitration but will come back at just $6 million after he was unable to land a better deal elsewhere. He should slot back in as the team’s closer and could be a trade candidate again this summer if the Nationals are not in playoff contention. That means Jorge Lopez will go back to being just another late-inning reliever for Washington.
  • FA Right Fielder #43
Harold Ramírez has signed with the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos of the independent Mexican League.
Ramírez got into 73 contests last year between the Rays and Nationals, posting a pedestrian .604 OPS with two homers and six steals in 246 plate appearances. The 30-year-old was a reliable lefty-mashing platoon option a couple years ago, but his lack of defensive versatility hurts his ability to latch on in a bench role.

Francys Romero reports RHP Michel Baez has signed with the Sultanes de Monterrey of the Mexican League
Baez signed with the Padres out of Cuba in 2016 and quickly rose to top-50 prospect status before his MLB career flamed out. The 29-year-old right-hander is set for his second season in the Mexican League. Baez hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022.
  • FA Relief Pitcher #58
    Pirates released RHP Yerry Rodriguez.
No word yet on the reason for the move, as Rodriguez was just signed to a minor league deal in November. It’s possible that he has another opportunity that he wishes to explore, either with another team or overseas. The 27-year-old hurler posted an underwhelming 8.72 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 21 2/3 innings between the Rangers and Blue Jays in 2024.
