Making his major league debut against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, Tyler Wagner allowed five runs on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Wagner ran into trouble almost immediately, when Paul Goldschmidt welcomed him to the bigs with a solo homer in the first inning. In the second frame, Wagner uncorked a wild pitch to score Mark Trumbo before allowing a pair of RBI singles. A fourth-inning sacrifice fly by Cliff Pennington would be the last run to score on Wagner’s watch. In addition to the nine hits and five runs allowed, the 24-year-old right-hander struck out two and walked one. This start could have gone more smoothly, but his Triple-A numbers are quite good at a 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 38/15 K/BB ratio in 53 2/3 innings. With Wily Peralta (oblique) on the shelf, Wagner could see additional starts moving forward, though Sunday’s results don’t exactly help his case.
