Lyons was roughed up in his lone appearance for the Yanks in 2020 but was decent for them in his limited chances in 2019. The 32-year-old was a successful reliever for the Cardinals once upon a time, but that was a while ago.

Lyons will join the Yankees’ bullpen ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Blue Jays. The 32-year-old left-hander struggled to an 8.64 ERA in 16 2/3 innings last season between Pittsburgh and New York.

Lyon elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Yankees in November. The southpaw posted a 4.15 ERA over 11 appearances with New York in 2019. He’ll have an opportunity to compete for one of the final spots in the bullpen this spring but figures to wind up at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Lyons will explore free agency rather than accept an outright assignment from the Yankees. The 31-year-old southpaw posted a 4.15 ERA over 11 appearances with the Yankees this past season.

Lyons was released by the Pirates earlier this week after spending nearly all of the season at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he held a 3.35 ERA and 55/16 K/BB ratio across 45 2/3 innings. He’ll give the Yanks additional lefty relief depth.
