The Mariners optioned OF Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Tacoma; reassigned RHP Ty Buttrey to minor league camp.
Clase spent most of his 2023 season at the Double-A level with the Arkansas Travelers where he slashed .222/.331/.396 across 489 plate appearances. He’ll get his first crack at the Triple-A level this season and is unlikely to get a call up unless there’s a significant injury to Seattle’s outfield.

The 29-year-old hurler has really struggled after taking the 2021 season off, posting a 5.11 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 5/3 K/BB ratio over 12 1/3 innings at Triple-A Salt Lake. There’s a chance that another team could be willing to take a chance on him on waivers -- given his previous success at the big league level.

Angels reinstated RHP Ty Buttrey from the restricted list; optioned him to Triple-A Salt Lake.
Buttrey needed to be added to the Angels’ 40-man roster this spring after coming out of retirement. The 29-year-old righty, who last pitched back in the majors during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, will open the impending regular season in the upper minors.

Ty Buttrey announced on Twitter on Sunday that he’s interested in returning to Major League Baseball in 2022.
The right-hander was placed on the restricted list after he chose not to report to the Angels alternate training site after he was optioned to Triple-A in March of 2021. He then announced his retirement, citing his desire to do other things with his life. It’s unclear if he has had any talks with the Angels -- or any other clubs -- about a potential return. Buttrey struggled during the truncated 2020 season, but owns a respectable 4.30 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 122/37 K/BB ratio over 115 innings in his big league career.

Angels placed RHP Ty Buttrey on the restricted list.
Angels manager Joe Maddon announced Friday that Buttrey has chosen not to report to the team’s alternate training site an has opted to walk away from the game for the time being. It’s unclear if there’s an underlying issue at play here that played a part in Buttrey’s surprise demotion to the alternate site at the end of Spring Training, or if he’s angry about not making the Opening Day roster and that’s influencing his decision now. Either way, we wish him all the best.
