Wingenter

Wingenter will take his talents overseas after being non-tendered a couple weeks ago by the Cubs. The hard-throwing 30-year-old righty reliever has made 97 appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2018.

This was a formality after all of these players were DFA’d to open up 40-man roster spots on Tuesday. They’re officially free agents now. It sounds like the Cubs are hoping Alzolay returns, but Wisdom is likely to head elsewhere.

Wingenter is booted from the roster to make room for Matt Thaiss, with Thaiss coming over in a trade with the Angels. The 6-foot-7 right-hander should see interest on the waiver wire as a depth arm.

Wingenter pitched scoreless innings the last two days, so he just has to be sent down for a fresh arm, even though none of the Cubs’ top four relievers worked at all Saturday or Sunday.

Chicago sent down Wingenter earlier this week. He’s been recalled now with Jordan Wicks going on the injured list. Wingenter is a fresh arm in the bullpen and could be sent down again if the Cubs need a starter next week.

Wingenter has allowed nine runs in five appearances with the Red Sox and Cubs this year. He has a 2.98 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 75 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings at Triple-A this season.

Wingenter will take the roster spot of Jorge López with López hitting the IL with a right groin strain. Wingenter was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from the Red Sox near the start of August, and will be a middle-inning option in his first stint with the club.

The 30-year-old hurler is on the move again after getting designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday. He posted a troublesome 27.00 ERA and 3.00 WHIP in his two innings with the Red Sox, so it’s not hard to see why he was let go. It’s unclear if he’ll join the Cubs’ bullpen immediately or if they plan on sending him to Triple-A Iowa to begin his tenure with the club.

The move clears up a spot on Boston’s active roster for newly-acquired reliever Luis García.

Weissert was solid to start the season for the Red Sox but has a 6.46 ERA since May 31. The 29-year-old has allowed 27 hits and walked 12 in his last 23 2/3 innings, so he really needed a minor league re-set. Perhaps he’ll get another chance in the big league bullpen later this summer, but Trey Wingenter will be called up to take his place for now.
