Blue Jays selected the contract of RHP Tommy Nance from Triple-A Buffalo.
Nance joins Toronto’s bullpen for Thursday’s showdown against the Orioles with lefty Génesis Cabrera going on paternity leave just one day after being acquired from the Padres in a rare post-trade deadline deal. Padres optioned RHPs Alek Jacob and Logan Gillaspie to Triple-A El Paso; Re-assigned RHPs Ryan Bergert and Tommy Nance and LHP Jayvien Sandridge to minor league camp.
The Padres are trimming down their roster a bit more aggressively than most teams, as they’re set to open up the season first in South Korea against the Dodgers in just a couple of weeks. None of the five players sent out on Saturday were real candidates to break camp with the big league club, though Jacob should see plenty of action out of the Padres’ bullpen during the 2024 campaign.

Nance, 32, elected free agency in early November after he refused an outright assignment to Triple-A by the Marlins. The right-hander logged just 17 minor league innings in 2023 as he worked his way back from a shoulder injury. He’ll function as extra bullpen depth for the Friars.

The 32-year-old right-hander missed the entire 2023 season due to shoulder issues and a left oblique strain. The Marlins removed him from their 40-man roster on Tuesday, but rather than accepting the outright assignment to Triple-A, he’ll take his chances on the open market.

Nance wound up missing the entire 2023 campaign due to a shoulder injury and has been removed from Miami’s 40-man roster heading into the offseason. The hard-throwing 32-year-old righty figures to be healthy for spring training.

The right-hander is currently shelved with a right oblique strain and wasn’t going to make it back this season, so they’ll move him to the 60-day injured list to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Matt Moore. Nance should be fully recovered and ready to rock for spring training in 2024.

He’ll be in the pen today. Nance had been out since the spring with a shoulder strain, but he made 10 appearances on a rehab assignment, posting a 1.32 ERA in 13 2/3 innings. The 32-year-old had a 4.33 ERA in 43 2/3 innings for the Marlins last year.

Tommy Nance (shoulder) fired a scoreless inning Friday for Low-A Jupiter.
Nance struck out one and threw nine pitches in his one inning of work on Friday. The 32-year-old has been on the shelf since spring training due to a right shoulder strain and had to take a step back after experiencing renewed soreness in May. He should return to the Marlins bullpen in late August if things go according to plan.
