Tigers signed RHP Tommy Kahnle to a one-year, $7.75 million contract.
Kahnle was a big part of the Yankees’ bullpen in 2024, and is a significant addition to the Tigers’ group for the 2025 campaign. He forged a 2.11 ERA while relying on his elite change, and he’ll all but assuredly be a high-leverage option for Detroit this summer.

Tommy Kahnle is close to signing with the Tigers, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports.
It’s surprising the Yankees couldn’t get anything done here. Kahnle is a fine reliever, but given his lack of durability, he seems like more of a luxury purchase for a top-flight team than a reliable cog for a mid-payroll club. The 35-year-old had a 2.11 ERA in 42 2/3 innings for the Yankees last season. That innings total was his high mark since 2019.

According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies are among the teams interested in free agent right-hander Tommy Kahnle.
The 35-year-old hurler has generated interest from at least eight teams already, so it sounds like he’ll do pretty well for himself on the open market. Kahnle was brilliant once again for the Yankees in 2024, registering a 2.11 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 46/19 K/BB ratio over 42 2/3 frames.

The Yankees are among eight teams showing interest in Tommy Kahnle, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.
Kahnle, 35, hasn’t put in a full season since 2019, but he has been very effective when available the last two seasons, amassing a 2.38 ERA for the Yankees. A reunion with the Bombers makes plenty of sense.

Tommy Kahnle tossed a scoreless ninth inning and got the save against the Guardians on Friday.
Kahnle allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth, but ultimately shut the door to close out the Guardians in Game 4. With Luke Weaver gassed after his recent usage and blowing the save in Game 3, Kahnle was the choice to close Game 4. He attacked the Guardians hitters with changeup after changeup in the ninth inning. Weaver was warming up in the ninth inning in case Kahnle got into real trouble and should get the next save opportunity for New York, but Kahnle was excellent as he pitched the Yankees to a 3-1 ALCS lead.

Tommy Kahnle got a double play ball from the only batter he faced to pick up his first save Sunday against the Red Sox.
Clay Holmes got two outs in the eighth today for his first hold. The Yankees could have stuck with him, but they opted to go to Jake Cousins for the save chance in a 4-1 game in the ninth. Plans changed after Cousins hit a batter and walked another, recording one out in between. Kahnle then came in to face Jarren Duran and got the game-ending grounder. It was his eighth career save in 10 big-league seasons. The Yankees will likely keep mixing and matching at the end of games for now.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters Clay Holmes “could very well” be the club’s closer on Tuesday against the Guardians.
There aren’t a ton of alternatives for the Yankees at this late juncture of the season, but Holmes appears to still have a grip on the closing role after suffering his 10th blown save of the year on Sunday night against the Tigers. It’s possible they’ll turn to Tommy Kahnle or Luke Weaver, but Holmes still appears to be in the mix for saves.

Yankees activated RHP Tommy Kahnle from the 15-day injured list.
Clayton Andrews was sent down last night to make room. Kahnle had been on the injured list since the start of the year due to shoulder inflammation. The setup man pitched five hitless innings and struck out 11 during his rehab stint, though none of that came in Triple-A. He’s also yet to pitch on back-to-back days.

Yankees manager Tommy Kahnle believes that Tommy Kahnle (shoulder) could return Wednesday.
Kahnle will make a rehab appearance Sunday, and if all goes well, the 34-year-old could be a helper for the Yankees bullpen in the middle of the week. Kahnle has dealt with a plethora of injury issues over the past few years, but when healthy, he’s been an effective option.

Yankees sent RHP Tommy Kahnle (shoulder) on a rehab assignment to Single-A Tampa.
The 34-year-old will get his first rehab appearance since being placed on the 15-day injured list at the start of the season. Kahnle had his throwing program slowed down at the beginning of April, so he is a bit behind schedule, but he’ll likely need a few rehab stints before he’s back in pinstripes.
