Cosgrove, 29, excelled for the Padres in his major league debut in 2023, throwing 51 1/3 innings with a 1.75 ERA, but with his velocity in decline, he’s given up 20 runs in 18 2/3 innings in the majors in the two seasons since. He doesn’t figure to win a bullpen spot out of spring training.

Cosgrove went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The 29-year-old lefty made two relief appearances earlier this season for Chicago. He figures to stick around as emergency left-handed relief depth.

Cosgrove has been removed from Chicago’s 40-man roster to clear space for the club to claim starter Aaron Civale off waivers from the White Sox. The 29-year-old lefty has made only two appearances in the big leagues this season.

Cosgrove heads back to the minors between games of Tuesday’s twin bill against the Brewers to free up a roster spot for veteran starter Jameson Taillon.

Cosgrove returns to the majors for the first time since May. He’ll add some depth for a twin-billing scheduled for Tuesday against the Brewers, and Luke Little was optioned to Triple-A to make room.

Cosgrove returns to the minors to clear a spot on Chicago’s active roster for top prospect Cade Horton. The 28-year-old lefty has made two relief appearances this season at the big-league level. He should return in a couple weeks.

With Caleb Thielbar away on paternity leave, Cosgrove will provide the Cubs with a fresh arm in their bullpen for their weekend set against the Mets. Cosgrove has made one appearance with the Cubs this season, firing a pair of scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

Cosgrove was a mainstay in San Diego’s bullpen from 2023-2024 when he made 72 relief appearances, finishing with a solid 3.95 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 59/25 K/BB ratio across 66 innings during that span. The 28-year-old southpaw joins Chicago’s relief corps ahead of Sunday night’s showdown against the Phillies at Wrigley Field.

The 28-year-old southpaw had been designated for assignment by the Padres over the weekend, so they were willing to flip him for anything that they could get. He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Iowa where he’ll function as extra bullpen depth for the Cubs. Caleb Kilian was designated for assignment to free up a spot on the club’s 40-man roster.
