He’ll likely finish the year in El Paso now, with Martin Perez brought off the paternity list to make room.

With Martín Pérez going on the paternity list, the Padres were able to bring Cosgrove back seven days after demoting him. He has an 11.68 ERA in 18 appearances out of the team’s bullpen this season.

Cosgrove didn’t pitch in two days with the Padres. It’s been a rough go for him in 2024 after he performed as one of baseball’s best rookie relievers last year, amassing a 1.75 ERA in 51 1/3 innings.

Cosgrove was shelled for 19 runs in 14 2/3 innings in his previous stint with the club, but the 28-year-old will get another chance to be a middle-inning option with rosters expanding.

Cosgrove will remain stationed at Triple-A El Paso as extra relief depth after wrapping up a minor league rehab assignment. The 28-year-old southpaw allowed 19 runs on 23 hits with a 15/6 K/BB ratio across 14 2/3 innings (18 appearances) for the Padres before hitting the injured list back in late June with left elbow inflammation.

The 28-year-old hurler has posted a troublesome 11.66 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and a 15/6 K/BB ratio over 14 2/3 innings with the Padres this season and was especially brutal his last time out — giving up four runs in just 1/3 of an inning. No word yet on how long he will be shelved for. Austin Davis had his contract selected from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move on Friday.

The Padres wanted to add a fresh arm to their bullpen over the weekend, so Cosgrove will get another opportunity with the big-league club. The 28-year-old southpaw has been hit exceptionally hard in 10 appearances out of the Padres’ bullpen this season, posting a 10.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and a 13/5 K/BB ratio across 12 innings. Adam Mazur was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move on Friday.

Cosgrove heads back to the minors to make room for veteran Yu Darvish to return from the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s contest against the Reds.

The Padres took a three-run lead in the top of the tenth after Josh Hader tossed a scoreless ninth. Cosgrove took the mound to close it out and recorded all three outs on 13 pitches for his first save of the season.

Cosgrove returns to San Diego’s bullpen ahead of Saturday’s game against the Reds following a minimum stay on the injured list with a left hamstring strain.
