After a flurry of moves Friday, the Yanks still needed roster space for the returning Alex Rodriguez. Since Jackson hasn’t thrown a pitch since being recalled in mid-April, he was the obvious choice.

Jackson, who was picked over some more talented relievers when the Yankees made their 40-man roster additions over the winter, will pitch in middle relief in his major league debut.

The 27-year-old righthander will take the spot of Donnie Veal. Jackson was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on May 18. He has a 3.10 ERA in 11 appearances this season.

Jackson was designated on May 8 after posting a 1.88 ERA in seven appearances for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 27-year old will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Jackson was claimed off waivers from the Yankees on May 18, but posted an 8/11 K/BB ratio and 3.44 ERA in 18 1/3 innings with the Pirates. He may be recalled if there’s an injury on the major league level.

Jackson has a 4.37 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 22 2/3 innings for Pittsburgh this season and should not be a consideration in NL-only leagues. The right-hander will work in middle relief.

Jackson had a 6.35 ERA in 17 innings with Indianapolis before his promotion on August 2, so it’s not like anyone was expecting greatness. He allowed four earned runs in two innings against the Diamondbacks Thursday night and will leave behind a 4.37 ERA and 13/14 K/BB ratio.

Pittsburgh needed room on their 40-man roster with the recent acquisitions of outfielders Ryan Church and Brandon Jones. The 27-year-old Jackson had a 3.14 ERA through 40 appearances for the Pirates last season, making his designation somewhat surprising. He had a 21/22 K/BB ratio, however, and will have a hard time ever replicating 2009 again unless his control improves. Jackson’s success last season might mean that he garners interest through the waiver process from a team with intentions of handing him a major league bullpen spot. The Pirates, meanwhile, hope he slips through the cracks and returns to Triple-A Indianapolis for the start of next season.
