Sterlin Thompson smacked an RBI triple and scored a pair of runs on Sunday afternoon, propelling the Rockies to a 3-1 victory over the Brewers in their Cactus League tilt.
Thompson entered the game as a pinch-runner in the sixth inning and raced around to score the Rockies’ first run on an RBI single by Brendan Rodgers. He then broke that tie the following frame with a run-scoring triple off of Joe Ross before scoring on a run-scoring single by Jordan Beck. Thompson has already been sent back to minor league camp, so he’s not going to crack the team’s Opening Day roster, but he’s had a nice spring overall — hitting .333 (4-for-12) with four runs scored and four RBI in his limited Cactus League action.
  • COL Shortstop #91
Rockies optioned INF Adael Amador, OF Yanquiel Fernandez, and RHPs Angel Chivilli and Juan Mejia to Double-A Hartford; optioned RHP Noah Davis to Triple-A Albuquerque; reassigned RHPs Karl Kauffmann, Jeff Criswell, Chance Adams, OF Zac Veen and INF Sterlin Thompson to minor league camp.
Amador blossomed last year into one of the top prospects in the entire fantasy landscape from a dynasty standpoint as his contact skills put him on the potential fast track to the majors as he enters his age-21 season. Fernandez, Veen and Thompson also have a great deal of fantasy potential, if they ascend to the big leagues in Colorado down the line.
  • Third Baseman
Rockies signed first-round pick OF Sterlin Thompson.
It’s not clear at this point what Thompson’s signing bonus will be, but the slot value for the No. 31 overall pick is $2.4305 million. Thompson is viewed as more of a high-floor option, although his offensive numbers certainly could be boosted by Coors Field.

  • COL Starting Pitcher
Rockies signed first-round pick RHP Gabriel Hughes.
Hughes was the 10th pick out of the draft out of Gonzaga. He gets $4 million, which is almost a million below the allocated funds assigned for that pick. The right-hander has three pitches that can miss bats, and has shown the ability to command the offerings as well, for the most part. The Rockies also signed Sterlin Thompson out of Florida who was selected with the 31st pick, and Jordan Beck out of Tennessee who went with pick 38.

  • Third Baseman
Rockies selected Florida OF/INF Sterlin Thompson with the 31st pick of the 2022 MLB Draft.
Thompson is considered one of the best pure hitters in the class, with a chance for a plus hit tool from the left side. The power isn’t the highlight in his tool chest, but Colorado has a chance to help that profile play up. There are defensive question marks, but Thompson is good enough in terms of athleticism to project as a corner outfielder. He’s a high-floor option that could reach the big leagues quickly.
