Despite his overall success this season (14 saves in 15 opportunities), Shingo Takatsu may not be the White Sox closer in 2005.
American League hitters seem to be getting wise to Takatsu and his deceptive pitches, as he has an 8.68 ERA over his last 10 games. White Sox GM Kenny Williams could look for a power arm for the back of his bullpen in the offseason, but with so few free agents available, it’s not all that likely that a change will be made.

Korean right-hander Sang Ho Moon was in White Sox camp for a tryout yesterday.
''He throws very hard,’' White Sox bullpen catcher Man Soo Lee said. ''His slider is very nice and his splitter is OK. After one year in the minors, maybe he could pitch here.’' If the 23-year-old Moon is signed, it would be to a minor league deal.

Even though Shingo Takatsu had a string of 17 1/3 scoreless innings heading into Friday night’s game, he’s not positioned to replace the erratic Billy Koch in the closer’s role.
''The only way Shingo is going to (close games) now is if we go to extra innings,’' manager Ozzie Guillen said. ''My closer is Koch. Takatsu has thrown the ball really well, but I have to go with my man.’' Takatsu ranks among AL relief leaders in ERA (1.33) and opponents batting average (.159). Must be something about Chicago that makes managers keep their most effective relievers in setup roles.

The Yankees have reportedly talked to the agents of both Shingo Takatsu and Aaron Sele.
If they sign Shingo soon, he could face his former teammates (White Sox) next week.

Mets signed RHP Shingo Takatsu to a minor league contract.
There are worse bets out there and a couple of them currently occupy spots in the Mets’ bullpen. Takatsu will probably be called up if he pitches well for Triple-A Norfolk.

White Sox exercised RHP Shingo Takatsu’s $2.5 million option for 2005.
The White Sox don’t believe Takatsu will be effective next year as he was in 2004, but at $2.5 million, he seems like a pretty good deal. The plan is for him to enter 2005 as a closer, but the team would like to sign a quality alternative.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Shingo Takatsu from Triple-A Norfolk.
Takatsu had allowed three runs in eight innings since joining the Tides. Manager Willie Randolph should try to spot him against right-handers this month.

Chicago’s blowout win over the Rockies allowed Shingo Takatsu to pitch last night for the first time since May 29.
Takatsu pitched a scoreless ninth inning in relief of Freddy Garcia. It appears as though he has gone from closer to mop up duty in just a couple months.

Korean RHP Sang Ho Moon probably won’t sign with the White Sox because of a difference of opinion about what he’s worth.
The White Sox would have given him a minor league deal and used him as a reliever, but Moon wants to start and believes he deserves a sizable bonus. He’ll begin trying out for other teams.

Shingo Takatsu worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings against the Tigers to earn a win in tonight’s 13-inning contest.
He was well rested after not pitching for a week. Takatsu may finally be all the way out of the doghouse now, but with Dustin Hermanson, Cliff Politte, Damaso Marte and Neal Cotts all pitching so well, there’s still not going to be much work for him in close games.
