Orioles C/1B prospect Samuel Basallo went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a home run and four RBI for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old is knocking on the door for an MLB call-up, but a few things are working against him. For starters, the Orioles are not contending this year, so they may not be inclined to burn Basallo’s rookie eligibility to add him to the lineup in a season where there is little to play for. Additionally, Basallo has work to do behind the plate as a catcher. He has started only 22 games at catcher this season, while playing 15 games at first base and 19 games at designated hitter. If the Orioles are not confident in his defense behind the plate, they need to decide if his best fit long-term is at first base or at designated hitter. With Adley Rutschman around, Basallo’s best long-term home would likely be at first base, but the Orioles have Ryan O’Hearn there, at least until the trade deadline.

Orioles top C prospect Samuel Basallo remains at Triple-A Norfolk.
Baltimore has opted to bring up newly-acquired journeyman backstop Alex Jackson from Triple-A Norfolk ahead of Sunday’s series finale against Atlanta while Gary Sánchez hitting the injured list with a right knee sprain. It’ll be Jacob Stallings handling the catching duties for now as the injuries continue to pile up at the position. The Orioles have even brought up David Bañuelos on the taxi squad as extra insurance. The 20-year-old top prospect holds a .920 OPS with 16 homers through 57 games this season at the Triple-A level. He’s one of the few prospects left in the minors that could make some serious noise for fantasy purposes in the second half.

Gary Sánchez left Saturday’s game against Atlanta with right knee pain.
It’s not known when the injury occurred. The 32-year-old has been replaced by Jacob Stallings. There should be more info on Sánchez’s availability soon, but the Orioles may need to make a move just based on the plethora of injuries that have occurred behind the plate. Any sort of extended absence could force Baltimore to promote top prospect Samuel Basallo to the majors.

Orioles placed C Chadwick Tromp on the 10-day injured list with a lower back strain.
MLB.com’s Jake Rill adds that Tromp is the 23rd Orioles player to hit the injured list this season. He’s also the third catcher Baltimore has lost due to injury in the past two weeks alone. It’ll be veteran journeyman Jacob Stallings, not top prospect Samuel Basallo, coming up to take his spot on the club’s active roster. The 30-year-old suffered the injury during Monday’s series opener against the Rangers and figures to miss a couple weeks.

Chadwick Tromp was removed from Monday’s game against the Rangers with back tightness.
It’s starting to look like the Orioles might legitimately run out of catchers. Gary Sánchez is the only healthy backstop left on the club’s 40-man roster at the moment unless Baltimore finally wants to finally call up top prospect Samuel Basallo.

Maverick Handley is undergoing “full body” evaluation after being removed from Sunday’s game against the Yankees following a home-plate collision.
Handley was inadvertently knocked completely off his feet on a scary-looking collision with Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. while attempting to field an errant throw up the third-base line during the early stages of Sunday’s game. He’ll be evaluated for a possible concussion in addition to other potential injuries. There should be an update on his status ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Rangers. It’s worth noting that Samuel Basallo wasn’t scratched from Sunday’s lineup at Triple-A Norfolk and is unlikely to be called up as temporary stopgap, despite injuries to both Handley and Adley Rutschman (oblique).

Maverick Handley made an early exit from Sunday’s game against the Yankees in the second inning following a home-plate collision with Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Handley was led up the third-base line to field an off-target throw to the plate, which took him directly into the path of an oncoming Chisholm, resulting in a scary-looking collision. The 27-year-old backstop was clearly shaken up on the play and left with an athletic trainer. He’ll undoubtedly undergo further evaluation and testing for a possible concussion. There should be an update on his status following the contest. It’s an unfortunate development for the Orioles since Handley had just returned to the majors to replace an injured Adley Rutschman. It’s too soon to speculate, but the club would likely have to find some emergency catching depth or consider calling up top prospect Samuel Basallo if Handley winds up missing sigificant time.

Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino said Sunday that Adley Rutschman (oblique) will likely be out through the All-Star break.
Fantasy managers shouldn’t expect Rutschman back until after next month’s Midsummer Classic, which takes place on July 15 in Atlanta. The 27-year-old backstop hit the shelf earlier this weekend for the first time in his career with what Mansolino described as a “mild” left oblique strain. However, he’s still going to miss at least a couple weeks. The frustrating development here is that the Orioles seemingly aren’t considering promoting top prospect Samuel Basallo to fill the void and will instead roll with veteran Gary Sánchez and rookie Maverick Handley as his caddy.

Orioles placed C Adley Rutschman on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 20, with a left oblique strain.
Rutschman underwent an MRI on Saturday morning that revealed an oblique strain after being scratched from Friday’s lineup with left abdominal tightness. Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino told reporters that top prospect Samuel Basallo is not being considered as a call up while Rutschman is sidelined. It’ll be Gary Sánchez and Maverick Handley taking over the catching duties. No word on the severity of the strain, which will determine how much time he misses, but fantasy managers should anticipate a multi-week absence, even in a best-case scenario. It’s the first time Rutschman has required a trip to the injured list since arriving in the big leagues back in 2022.

Adley Rutschman (abdomen) remains out of the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Yankees.
Rutschman will sit out his second consecutive contest due to left abdominal tightness with Gary Sánchez handling the catching duties on Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium against his former club. The 27-year-old backstop was scratched from Friday’s lineup out of an abundance of caution with Orioles interim manager Tony Mansolino telling reporters that he’ll undergo an MRI this weekend to determine the severity of the issue. Mansolino added that top prospect Samuel Basallo, who has been tearing the cover off the ball for Triple-A Norfolk recently, has not been discussed as a potential replacement if Rutschman misses time. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day heading into Sunday’s series finale while preparing for the possibility that he’ll require a trip to the injured list.
