Mariners signed OF Sammy Siani to a minor league contract.
The Pirates made Siani the 37th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft but he never reached Pittsburgh, topping out at Triple-A Indianapolis this past season where he batted .261/.337/.424 with four homers and three steals in 104 plate appearances over 25 games. The change of scenery is the wild card variable, but it seems unlikely he’ll morph into an impact fantasy contributor at this stage of his development. The 25-year-old is likely ticketed for Triple-A Tacoma after spring training.

Sammy Siani went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI for Scottsdale on Thursday, raising his AFL average to .455.
Siani has struggled to stay healthy since the Pirates made him the 37th overall pick in the 2019 draft, but he played in a career-high 116 games this year, hitting .324/.402/.564 in 20 games in high-A ball before fading to .254/.325/.368 in 96 games in Double-A. He’s probably never going to hit for a whole lot of power and his defense, while more than adequate, isn’t at the level of his older brother Michael’s, so he’s probably going to be a reserve if he makes the majors. The Pirates figure to leave him available in the Rule 5 draft.

Pirates drafted OF Sammy Siani out of Penn Charter HS in Pennsylvania with the 37th pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Siani is the brother of Mike Siani, who was a high pick by the Reds in the 2018 draft. Sammy has more upside, showing the ability to hit for average from the left side, and plus speed, as well. There are questions about his power and whether he can stay in center, but he projects as a bat-first hitter who could hit at or near the top of a lineup someday.
