Sherriff signed a minor league contract last month with the Dodgers and has been cut loose after making just a pair of relief appearances for Triple-A Oklahoma City. The 33-year-old southpaw made five relief appearances earlier this season for the Red Sox.

Sherriff heads to Los Angeles to bolster the Dodgers’ organizational relief depth just a few weeks after being designated for assignment by the Red Sox and electing free agency. The 33-year-old left-hander made five relief appearances for Boston this season in the big leagues.

Sherriff has refused an outright minor league assignment and will test the free agent waters after being designated for assignment last week by the Red Sox. The 33-year-old southpaw reliever has made five relief appearances this season in the majors and shouldn’t have any trouble finding a new opportunity.

With Yu Chang returning from the 60-day IL on Friday, the Red Sox needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster and it looks like Sherriff was the odd-man out. He has posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 5/2 K/BB ratio over 6 2/3 innings at the big league level this season. He could draw some interest on waivers.

With the bullpen taxed in Saturday’s doubleheader, the Red Sox needed rested relievers and optioned the 33-year-old to Triple-A. He pitched well during his time with the big league club and should return soon.

Sherriff made a pair of scoreless relief appearances earlier this season for the Red Sox and has been summoned ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Reds with veteran Corey Kluber away from the club on paternity leave.

Kutter Crawford will be called up to replace him before Friday’s game. Sherriff was just called up Tuesday and tossed two scoreless innings during his brief stay.

Sherriff last appeared in the majors with the Rays back in 2021 when he made a career-high 16 relief appearances. The 32-year-old southpaw will pitch in middle relief for the Red Sox after posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 16/8 K/BB ratio across 15 innings (15 appearances) this season for Triple-A Worcester.

Sherriff last appeared in the majors with the Rays during the 2021 campaign. The 32-year-old southpaw didn’t end up making an appearance last season for the Phillies after his stuff never rebounded after experiencing left biceps tendinitis during spring training. He holds a solid 3.65 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 36/17 K/BB ratio across 44 1/3 innings (44 appearances) in the majors since 2017. He’ll function as organizational relief depth for the Red Sox this season and will likely make it to Fenway Park at some point.

Sherriff went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with the Phillies as organizational relief depth. The 32-year-old lefty has been out all season due to left biceps tendinitis.
