Cubs hired Ryan Flaherty as bench coach.
Flaherty was among the finalists for the Padres’ managerial vacancy, which ultimately went to former big league manager Mike Shildt. He’s been officially named to newly-minted Cubs manager Craig Counsell’s staff heading into 2024 after spending the last four years in San Diego. He’ll likely wind up managing somewhere in the future.

Ryan Flaherty will join the Cubs as their new bench coach, The Athletic’s Britt Ghiroli reports.
Flaherty, San Diego’s bench coach under Bob Melvin, is moving on after losing out on the managerial gig to Mike Shildt. The 37-year-old former Orioles utilityman is widely viewed as a future manager.
  • LAA Coach
The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee reports Angels coach Benji Gil has interviewed for the Padres’ managerial vacancy.
Gil has worked on the Angels’ coaching staff the last two seasons and also served earlier this year as the manager for Team Mexico in the World Baseball Classic. The 51-year-old, who spent eight years in the majors between the Rangers and Angels from 1993-2003, would be a first-time manager, if the Padres elect to put him at the helm. The organization has also reportedly expressed interest in Yankees bench coach Carlos Mendoza, while Mike Shildt and Ryan Flaherty are considered the top internal candidates to fill the void.

The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly reports the Giants are “poised to announce” the hiring of Padres manager Bob Melvin as their next manager.
Katie Woo and Dennis Lin of The Athletic add that Mike Shildt and Ryan Flaherty are the leading internal candidates to fill the Padres’ sudden managerial vacancy. Melvin heads to San Francisco to replace Gabe Kapler after spending the previous two years at the held for San Diego, leading the franchise to a 171-153 record and just one playoff appearance during that span. The 61-year-old skipper, who has taken home Manager of the Year honors three times in his career, has two decades of managerial experience between the Padres, Athletics, Diamondbacks and Mariners, dating back to 2003.

The Padres have hired Ryan Flaherty as a quality control coach.
That presumably means the end of the 33-year-old’s playing career. Flaherty batted .215/.284/.345 over parts of eight seasons for the Orioles, Braves and Indians.

Ryan Flaherty went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a run scored as the Indians fell to the Nationals on Friday evening in Washington.
Flaherty got the Tribe on the board with a run-scoring double off of Austin Voth in the third inning. He then scored the tying run later on the inning on a sacrifice fly by Francisco Lindor. It was the first RBI on the season for Flaherty who is slashing just .150/.150/.250 with seven strikeouts in 20 at-bats at the big league level this season.

Jose Ramirez is not in the Indians’ lineup Friday due to soreness in his surgically-repaired right hand.
It doesn’t sound like a big deal, but the Indians have decided to play it safe and rest Ramirez even though they essentially have a must-win game Friday. Ryan Flaherty is at the hot corner.
  • CLE 3rd Baseman #11
Jose Ramirez is not in the Indians’ lineup Friday.
Ramirez started the team’s first three games since he returned from the injured list and belted three home runs. However, he will rest Friday even as the team clings to fading playoff hopes. Ryan Flaherty will play third base. Franmil Reyes is also sitting out with the designated hitter spot unavailable in Washington.

Indians purchased the contract of INF/OF Ryan Flaherty from Triple-A Columbus.
Flaherty has extensive big league experience but he spent all of this season at Columbus, batting .263/.365/.466 with 19 homers. He could see a decent amount of action at third base with Jose Ramirez (hand) out.

Indians re-signed INF/OF Ryan Flaherty to a minor league contract.
Flaherty opted out of his deal after failing to make the Tribe’s Opening Day roster, but he wasn’t able to find a better opportunity and has returned as a depth piece.
