Twins sent LHP Ricky Barrett and LHP Errol Simonitsch outright to Triple-A Rochester.
Neither pitcher ever reached the majors while on the 40-man roster. They’ll have to accept their outright assignment, so they’ll probably be on Rochester’s staff as relievers next year.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher
Twins purchased the contracts of LHP Ricky Barrett, OF Denard Span, LHP Alexander Smit and LHP Oswaldo Sosa.
There was some thought that Barrett might go in last year’s Rule 5 draft, but he stayed put in Minnesota. Now that the new CBA has led to an extra year before players are eligible for the Rule 5 draft, teams can add more borderline prospects to their 40-man rosters. Barrett, who turns 26 in March, has a reasonable chance of turning into a lefty specialist, but he shouldn’t be more than that.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher
Twins optioned LHP Ricky Barrett to Triple-A Rochester, RHP Oswaldo Sosa to Double-A New Britain and LHP Alexander Smit to Single-A Ft. Myers; reassigned RHP Brad Voyles, C Jeff Christy, C Korey Feiner, C Jose Morales and INF Gil Velazquez to minor league camp.
Voyles was thought to have a slight chance of making the team, but he was limited to one inning this spring, apparently because of knee problems. Barrett has had issues with a sore elbow.
  • MIN Relief Pitcher
After giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning Wednesday, Ricky Barrett reportedly “felt something in his elbow.”
He’s scheduled to be looked at further Thursday and had little chance of making the Twins’ Opening Day roster anyway.
