It looks like the Mariners did this mostly to free up a roster spot. Hogan, a 2003 fifth-round pick, hit .236/.308/.357 for short-season Single-A Eugene last season. Williams, a lefty reliever with limited upside, will compete for a spot in the San Diego bullpen next spring.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was ejected after the first balk and Buehrle was tossed after the second. Buehrle was uncharacteristically animated following the second balk call, dropping his glove to the ground. He had to be restrained by Joey Cora and A.J. Pierzynski before leaving the field. He was replaced by left-hander Randy Williams with a runner on second base and one out.

Williams was claimed off waivers from the Padres last month. He’s likely to make it through this time.

The Tim Redding acquisition took away the bullpen spot that Williams, Steve Sparks and Joey Dawley were competing for.

He’s been working as a closer in the minors for the Rockies and would give them another left hander in the bullpen.

Williams, 29, had a 3.49 ERA since being sent down to Colorado Springs. He’s more of a middle reliever than a specialist, but that’s what the Rockies want.

He’s going to replace Jason Jennings, who’s out for the year with a fractured finger.

Williams provides the White Sox with a second lefty in the bullpen, but isn’t likely to have significant fantasy value. The 33-year-old has a 3.44 ERA in 33 games with Charlotte this season.
