Hitting coach Thad Bosley has worked with Ramon Hernandez and Terrence Long to see if each of them can manage one extra hit a week over their 2002 production.
So far the results are encouraging. If Long and Hernandez hit, the weak links in the Oakland lineup, can hit, the A’s could be outstanding. Long hit .083 in week one last season, compared to a .364 start this year. Hernandez started 2002 at .095, but had a .333 first week in 2003.
  • Ramon Hernandez, with 18 homers and 63 RBI, has the most of any Padres’ catcher since 1987 when Benito Santiago had 18 and 79.
Padres pitchers also boast the No. 7 ERA in the majors, for which Hernandez, who used to catch the Oakland aces, deserves much credit.
  • ESPN’s Peter Gammons reports that the Padres and A’s have agreed to a traded that will send Ramon Hernandez and Terrence Long to Oakland for Mark Kotsay.
The Hernandez-for-Kotsay rumors didn’t make a lot of sense at first, but with the A’s getting to throw Long into the deal, it now seems like a fair swap. The Padres likely will shift Brian Giles to center, opening up a spot for Xavier Nady. Long should get a chance to compete for a starting job, but unless he really steps up his play, he’ll be nothing more than a fourth outfielder.
  • Ramon Hernandez caught yesterday before the game against the A’s was rained out.
Hernandez had missed two games with tightness in his side.
  • Ramon Hernandez didn’t play yesterday due to tightness in his side.
    Hernandez is day-to-day.
  • Ramon Hernandez, on the DL with a sprained left knee, hasn’t caught from a squatting position.
Hernandez is expected to play a few games in the minors and return right after the All-Star break.
  • Ramon Hernandez (strained left knee) caught from a crouch on the side yesterday.
Hernandez will start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Portland on Friday and is projected to rejoin the Padres on July 26.
  • Ramon Hernandez (strained left knee) started his rehab assignment last night with Triple-A Portland.
Hernandez will catch three innings in each of his first two games, then catch five. After a day off, his workload will increase daily. He is expected to rejoin the Padres July 26.
  • Ramon Hernandez (strained left knee) remains on target to return to action right after the All-Star break.
He once again worked out with Padres’ manager Bruce Bochy (a former catcher) on his throwing mechanics. Hernandez will likely go out on a short rehab assignment over the All-star break.
  • Ramon Hernandez remains on track to come off the disabled list and start tomorrow.
Hernandez has gone 6-for-16 during his rehab stint with Triple-A Portland. Humberto Quintero is expected to be optioned to Portland when Hernandez returns.
