White Sox acquire left-hander Tyler Gilbert in a trade with the Phillies

Jesús Luzardo told reporters earlier this week that he’s “100 percent” recovered from a stress reaction in his back that shelved him for the final three months of last season.

Luzardo, who was acquired by the Phillies a couple weeks ago in a late-December trade, added that he’s had a normal throwing program this offseason after being limited to just 12 starts this past season for the Marlins due to a flexor strain and back issue. The 27-year-old southpaw is the front-runner to open next season as the Phillies’ fifth starter and figures to make an impact for fantasy managers, even in shallow mixed leagues, if his strikeout rate returns to pre-2024 levels.

Phillies acquired RHP Aaron Combs from the White Sox in exchange for LHP Tyler Gilbert.

Combs was one of about a billion players drafted out of Tennessee last year, and was selected in the ninth round pick by the White Sox. The 23-year-old right-hander projects as a depth piece, but Philadelphia will do their best to unlock more. Fantasy managers can’t count on it yet.

It is the holiday season, after all. Crismatt bounced around quite a bit last season, spending time with the Dodgers, Rangers and Padres. The 29-year-old journeyman sipped a couple cups of coffee in Los Angeles, but wound up making only five early-season relief appearances for the eventual World Series champions. He’ll augment Philadelphia’s middle relief depth heading into next season.

Zuñiga finds a new opportunity with the Phillies just a few weeks after being cut loose by the Angels. The 26-year-old reliever made 15 appearances last year for Los Angeles, finishing with a respectable 5.09 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 12/8 K/BB ratio across 17 2/3 innings of work. He’s merely extra organizational relief depth at this point.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters Monday that they’re planning to save Andrew Painter’s innings for “July-ish” next season.

Dombrowski added that Painter, who looked extremely impressive in the Arizona Fall League, will throw in spring training, but will not pitch in Grapefruit League exhibition contests. The Phillies swung a trade for Jesús Luzardo and also signed swingman Joe Ross to fortify their starting rotation mix with the goal of having Painter built up enough from a workload standpoint to be ready to make an impact in the second half of next year. The 21-year-old top pitching prospect is expected to make an instant impact for fantasy managers once he arrives in the majors.

The deal is now official. Ross heads to Philadelphia to fill a versatile swingman-type role in addition to providing additional starting pitching depth behind fifth starters Jesús Luzardo and Taijuan Walker. The 31-year-old righty posted a respectable 3.77 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 66/29 K/BB ratio across 74 innings (25 appearances, 10 starts) last year for the Brewers in his return from Tommy John surgery. There isn’t a ton of intrigue for fantasy purposes, but Ross figures to gobble up plenty of frames next year for the Phillies as a relief weapon.

Phillies acquired LHP Jesús Luzardo and C Paul McIntosh from the Marlins for SS Starlyn Caba and OF Emaarion Boyd.

The Phillies cash in one of their best prospects here in the hopes that Luzardo will stay healthy after a 2024 season in which he missed time early with elbow soreness and later was shut down for the year because of a stress reaction in his back. He’s expected to have a normal spring, so for now anyway, the Phillies rotation is full, leaving Taijuan Walker apparently bullpen bound and Andrew Painter to toil in the minors for a spell. Luzardo was terrific in 2023, finishing with a 3.58 ERA and 208 strikeouts in 178 2/3 innings, and it looked like he had the potential to do even better going forward. The Phillies will have him for two seasons before he becomes eligible for free agency.
