He’s expected to progress to true bullpen sessions Sunday. After that will come live batting practice and a rehab assignment. He’ll be eligible to come off the IL right after the break, but realistically, he’s probably about four weeks away.

3hTaijuan Walker, who has spent the last month in the pen, will serve as the Phillies’ starter Tuesday against the Giants.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Walker could throw around four innings after topping out at 2 2/3 innings as a reliever. Walker isn’t promised anything beyond the one start, but he could keep the spot into the second half as the Phillies weigh whether the time is right for Andrew Painter’s debut.

3hPhillies optioned RHP Mick Abel to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Abel’s ugly outing Wednesday has cost him his spot for now. He could return as the Phillies’ fifth starter after the break, but the team will also have Andrew Painter as an option then. First, Taijuan Walker is expected to get the call Tuesday, which is the one remaining time the Phillies will need a fifth starter before the break. It ended badly, but Abel did show some promise in his six major league starts. He heads back to Triple-A with a 5.04 ERA, but he had a 2.21 ERA and a 17/4 K/BB over 20 1/3 innings in his first four outings.

3hPhillies recalled RHP Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Johnson will get the chance to stick around as a middle reliever after serving as a 27th man in Wednesday’s doubleheader. He’s allowed one run in four innings for the Phillies this season. He had a 4.43 ERA and a 53/26 K/BB in 42 2/3 innings in Triple-A.

1dMax Kepler went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer as the Phillies bested the Padres 5-1 in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Kepler’s homer off Dylan Cease was his 10th of the season. This is actually just the sixth time all year that he’s driven in two runs in a game, and he’s never knocked in more than that. The Phillies were hoping from more from their free agent signing, but Kepler’s current .685 OPS is basically a match for what he did in 2022 and 2024, with 2023 standing out as his only really positive season in the last five years.

1dChristopher Sánchez completed seven innings and allowed just one run to beat the Padres in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

Sánchez is going to have to be an All-Star. He’s allowed exactly one run in his last three starts and hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of his last seven outings. This was also a fourth straight start in which he did not walk a single batter. He’s 7-2 with a 2.68 ERA and a 108/28 K/BB in 100 2/3 innings, and he’s slated to face the Giants next week.

1dMatt Strahm finished off a four-run lead in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Padres.

The lead was one too many runs for a save, but it’s notable that the Phillies again lined up Orion Kerkering for the eighth and Strahm for the ninth tonight. Since Kerkering’s last save on June 19, he’s pitched the eighth in all four of his appearances. Strahm has pitched the ninth four times, plus one appearance in the eighth, and earned two saves.

Mick Abel

1dMick Abel lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs and five walks Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Padres.

Two of the walks came with the bases loaded. That Abel had walked just four batters in 23 1/3 innings as a major leaguer coming into the day was an extremely nice surprise for the Phillies. Unfortunately, he unraveled in this one and went back to looking like the guy who finished 3-12 with a 6.46 ERA and 78 walks in 108 2/3 innings in Triple-A last year. The Phillies will need a fifth starter just once more before the break, so we’ll have to wait and see if they stick with Abel then or maybe send him down for a fresh arm and go with a bullpen game next week. It’s possible they’ll want to turn to Andrew Painter as their fifth starter after the break.

J.T. Realmuto

1dJ.T. Realmuto went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Padres.

Realmuto found some good spots today, getting his hits on outfield flies with xBAs if .350, .300 and .370. Still, he deserves some luck, considering he entered with a .355 slugging percentage versus a .404 xSLG. His exit velocity numbers are about the same as usual, but his now .365 slugging percentage is more than 60 points lower than his worst season mark (.428) from the last nine years.

Bryce Harper

1dBryce Harper is not in the lineup for the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Padres.

Philadelphia doesn’t want to push things for a workload standpoint with Harper only a few days removed from a stint on the injured list with right wrist inflammation. The 32-year-old fantasy stalwart should be back at the cold corner for Friday’s series opener against the Reds.
