Cardinals manager Oli Marmol told reporters on Friday that Iván Herrera has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain.
The recovery timetable for that specific severity typically ranges from 2-6 weeks, so it sounds likely Herrera is facing a multi-week absence, even in a best-case scenario. Pedro Pages will handle the bulk of the action behind the dish once again while Herrera is sidelined.

Pedro Pagés supplied both Cardinals runs Monday against the Orioles by hitting his fourth homer of the year.
Iván Herrera has caught just twice in the 16 games since he came off the IL, so Pagés is still getting plenty of playing time. He’s batting a mere .217/.250/.372 in 136 plate appearances, but the Cardinals love his defense behind the plate, and it seems like they’ll keep DHing Herrera the majority of the time.

Alec Burleson is on the bench for the Cardinals for Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Phillies on Wednesday.
The Phillies will start Jesus Luzardo in Game 1, so Burleson will take a seat with Ivan Herrera starting at DH and Pedro Pages catching. With Aaron Nola on the mound in Game 2, Burleson should play the second game of the doubleheader with Pages on the bench.

Iván Herrera is not in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Nationals.
It seems like a planned day off for Herrera as the Cardinals try to avoid ramping up his workload too quickly. The 24-year-old slugging backstop went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Friday at DH in his return to St. Louis’ lineup following a nearly five-week absence recovering from a bone bruise in his left knee. It’s a positive sign that he’s back, but fantasy managers should expect the club to avoid putting too much on his plate right out of the gate. It’ll be Alec Burleson at DH with Pedro Páges handling the catching duties on Saturday afternoon.

Ivan Herrera (knee) hopes to begin a minor league rehab assignment before the end of next week.
When the 24-year-old backstop initially suffered the bone bruise in his left knee, the expectation was that he would miss at least a month’s worth of action. We’re about three weeks out right now, which would seem to put him on track if he is indeed able to return to game action at some point next week. It’s unclear how many games he’ll need to get into before the Cardinals are ready to bring him back though. Those counting on Pedro Páges for everyday at-bats may soon need to look elsewhere.

Wilson Contreras is not in the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Phillies.
Contreras has been awful to begin the year with just five hits in his 49 at-bats, and he’ll get a day of rest for Friday’s tilt against Philadelphia. Jordan Walker is hitting second with Contreras off, and Pedro Pagés will get the start behind the plate.

Iván Herrera has been diagnosed with a bone bruise in his left knee and will miss at least four weeks.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told reporters Monday that Herrera will miss at least one month after additional testing revealed a more serious issue than merely knee inflammation. He also added that the club isn’t considering moving Willson Contreras back behind the plate. The 24-year-old backstop will be out until at least early May, even in a best-case scenario, but he’s worth stashing even in shallower formats. His absence creates an opportunity for Pedro Páges to play everyday, which makes Páges a potential pickup in deeper mixed leagues.

Cardinals placed C Iván Herrera on the 10-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
Herrera’s knee seemed a lot more than “inflamed” yesterday, but we’ll see. It’s a bad break after a scorching start that has him currently leading the NL with a 1.048 slugging percentage. Pedro Pagés will be the Cardinals’ primary catcher in his absence.

Cardinals are expected to recall Yohel Pozo from Triple-A Memphis in the wake of the injury to Ivan Herrera (knee).
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said Sunday night that Herrera wasn’t dealing with any sort of structural damage, and that he’s not looking at a “crazy recovery”. Pedro Pages will assume the bulk of the playing time behind the dish while Herrera is sidelined, with Pozo serving as his backup.

Cardinals manager Oli Marmol told ESPN’s Buster Olney during an in-game interview on Sunday Night that Ivan Herrera (knee) will be heading to the injured list.
The good news though, according to Marmol, is that imaging on Herrera’s knee revealed no structural damage. So while he’ll be down for at least a couple of weeks while dealing with the inflammation, it sounds like the Cardinals and fantasy managers were fortunate here that Herrera was able to avoid a significant injury. Pedro Pages filled in for him on Sunday and would seemingly be in line to see the bulk of the action behind the dish while Herrera is shelved.
