Royals RHP prospect Pedro Fernandez contributed a season-high eight strikeouts in Saturday’s win for High-A Wilmington.
He scattered three hits over 7 1/3 scoreless innings. Fernandez faced one batter over the minimum while slinging 60 of his 91 pitches for strikes. The 21-year-old is tied for sixth in the Carolina League with 31 strikeouts this year. He also owns the league’s sixth-lowest WHIP at 1.04. Fernandez struggled after his promotion to High-A late last season (0-6, 8.82 ERA in seven starts) but he’s turned things around with a brilliant start to the 2016 campaign.
