Patrick Sandoval told MassLive.com he underwent an internal brace procedure last July, not a full Tommy John surgery.
Sandoval added that he started a throwing program “a couple weeks ago” and is “progressing well” in the lead up to spring training, which is just over three weeks away. The unexpected revelation dramatically alters Sandoval’s potential return timetable as the initial expectation after he signed with the Red Sox last month was that he wouldn’t be ready until the late stages of the 2025 campaign, even in a best-case scenario. The 28-year-old lefty should be ready to contribute at some point around midseason and represents an intriguing stash candidate for fantasy managers as the second half draws closer. With his signature changeup still a big-time weapon, Sandoval seems like a perfect fit for Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey’s approach, which places an emphasis on attacking primarily with off-speed pitches.

Red Sox signed LHP Patrick Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25 million contract.
The deal is now official. Sandoval boasts one of the most dynamic changeups in the game and represents a worthwhile low-risk reclamation project for the Red Sox. The 28-year-old southpaw underwent Tommy John surgery back in late June and isn’t expected to be an option for Boston’s starting rotation mix until the late stages of next season. It’ll be fascinating to see how he fares in another organization’s pitching development engine, especially one like the Red Sox, who place an emphasis on off-speed pitches.

The Red Sox are signing Patrick Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25 million contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
He’ll get $5.5 million in 2025 and $12.75 million in 2026, which means Sandoval has probably made out better in terms of his new contract than any non-tendered player ever. The rehabbing lefty was projected for a $5.9 million salary next season by Matt Swartz, and he would not have been in line for a big raise in 2026, which was slated to be his final year prior to free agency, after missing at least the first half of 2025 following Tommy John. Sandoval was 2-8 with a 5.08 ERA for the Angels before getting hurt last season, but he had typically solid strikeout and groundball rates. He has a career 4.01 ERA in 100 starts and seven relief appearances, all coming with the Angels.

    Angels non-tendered LHP Patrick Sandoval.
The 28-year-old southpaw is expected to miss most — if not all — of the 2025 season while recovering from elbow surgery so this move doesn’t come as a major surprise. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see the Halos attempt to bring him back at a cheaper rate than the $5.9 million that he had been projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn via arbitration.

Patrick Sandoval underwent season-ending left elbow surgery on Wednesday.
No word yet whether Sandoval went a full Tommy John ligament replacement or a less invasive internal brace procedure. The 27-year-old southpaw is expected to miss most of, if not all, of the 2025 campaign.

Angels transferred LHP Patrick Sandoval to the 60-day injured list.
Sandoval was in the midst of one of the better stretches of his career before suffering a serious left elbow injury during last Friday’s start against the Dodgers. The 27-year-old southpaw will undergo season-ending surgery in the near future and is expected to miss a significant chunk, if not all, of the 2025 campaign as well.

Patrick Sandoval was found to have a torn UCL and will undergo season-ending surgery.
If it’s a full Tommy John, Sandoval will miss most or all of 2025. If he has the internal brace operation, it’s more likely that he’ll be able to return for the second half of the year. In spite of improved peripherals, Sandoval was 2-8 with a 5.08 ERA for the Angels this season. He had a 3.85 FIP, a 4.13 xERA and a 4.13 SIERA, but a .341 BABIP was causing big problems.

Angels placed LHP Patrick Sandoval on the 15-day injured list with a left elbow strain.
No word yet on the result of Sandoval’s MRI exam, but it’s not surprising in the slightest to see him wind up on the injured list after he exited Friday night’s start with tightness in his forearm. It remains unclear how long he’ll ultimately be shelved for. Guillo Zuniga was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move on Saturday.

Patrick Sandoval was removed from Friday night’s start against the Dodgers in the third inning due to left forearm tightness.
Sandoval delivered a pitch to Shohei Ohtani and immediately knew something was wrong and signaled for the training staff. He’ll almost assuredly undergo an MRI exam to determine the severity of the issue, but it’s likely that a lengthy stint on the injury list is upcoming. The Angels should have a better idea of his status on Saturday.

Patrick Sandoval was pulled from Friday night’s start against the Dodgers in the third inning due to an apparent arm injury.
The 27-year-old southpaw delivered a pitch to walk Shohei Ohtani, then immediately called for the training staff to come out to the mound — knowing something was wrong with his arm. He’ll head for further evaluation to determine exactly what’s going on there, but it would be shocking if it didn’t require a trip to the injured list at a minimum. Sandoval allowed two hits and two walks over his 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball before the injury.
