Nick Weglarz underwent surgery for a broken hamate bone in his right hand on Friday and is expected to miss the rest of the minor league season.
Weglarz, a 2005 third-round pick, was originally injured in spring training. He played in just one game in the Gulf Coast League this season before opting for surgery. He might be ready to take part in the Florida Instructional League.

Rays signed OF Nick Weglarz to a minor league contract.
The deal also includes an invitation to spring training, though Welgarz is highly doubtful to land a spot on Tampa Bay’s Opening Day roster. He batted .239/.349/.413 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI in 109 games this past season at the Double-A level.

Nick Weglarz went 0-for-5 in a doubleheader Friday and is batting .068 for Double-A Akron.
Weglarz finished at .276/.395/.497 in low-A ball in 2007 and .272/.396/.432 at high-A Kinston last year, but he’s just 3-for-44 in his first taste of Double-A.

Nick Weglarz went 4-for-4 with two homers Saturday for Single-A Kinston.
The 20-year-old Weglarz is batting .270/.396/.448 with 10 homers. He’s settling in as a very fine outfield prospect, perhaps one of the most underrated ones in baseball. The left-handed hitter is even batting .305/.412/.463 against southpaws.

Nick Weglarz went 2-for-4 with a homer Saturday for Single-A Kinston.
All Weglarz did early on was walk, but he has 13 hits in his last eight games, giving him a much nicer .296/.457/.481 line for the year. He displayed 20-homer power last year and it looks like he’s working on cutting back on the strikeouts, so he’s a fine prospect.
