Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Romy Gonzalez (quad) suffered a setback and will take longer to return than originally expected.
It’s another wrinkle in the Red Sox’ first base quagmire. Gonzalez was only expected to miss a couple weeks with a quad contusion, but it sounds like he’s going to need more time than anticipated. Cora told reporters earlier this week that rookie Kristian Campbell is not close to playing the position in games yet, but he continues to go through defensive drills at the position and figures to be an option at some point. It’ll be Nick Sogard and Abraham Toro at the cold corner for now.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
Red Sox recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard is many things, but he is certainly not Roman Anthony. The 27-year-old infielder gets the call to fortify Boston’s infield depth with first baseman Romy Gonzalez landing on the injured list ahead of Saturday’s game against the Royals. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
  • BOS 1st Baseman #23
Romy Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 8, with a left quad contusion.
No, Roman Anthony isn’t being called up as the corresponding move. Gonzalez will require a couple extra days off after hurting his quad earlier this week when he collided with Rangers first baseman Josh Smith. It’ll be Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard filling the void at the cold corner for now.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
Red Sox optioned INF/OF Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard is back in Triple-A with Alex Bregman activated off the paternity list. Sogard will likely be back if/when the Red Sox need some depth in the infield.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
Red Sox recalled INF/OF Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard gets the call to fill Alex Bregman’s roster spot while the veteran third baseman is away from the club for a couple days on paternity leave. He can be safely ignored in all fantasy formats.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo reports the Red Sox are calling up Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard will get the call to join Boston’s active roster for Wednesday’s series finale against the Rays with Alex Bregman going on paternity leave.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
Red Sox optioned INF Nick Sogard to Triple-A Worcester.
Sogard was one of the Red Sox’ final cuts this spring as they finalize their season-opening roster. The 27-year-old infielder will function as emergency depth for Boston at Triple-A Worcester, but it will likely be top prospect Marcelo Mayer coming up in virtually any other scenario involving an injury to Trevor Story or Kristian Campbell.
  • BOS Shortstop #20
Nick Sogard hit the third of three two-run homers for Boston as the Red Sox came from behind to tie the Orioles 6-6 on Monday.
The Red Sox were down 5-0 after six, only to get two-run blasts from Abraham Toro, Nathan Hickey and Sogard over the following two innings. Sogard, 27, finished last season in the majors, but he’s been an afterthought this spring. Showing additional pop would definitely help his case for a bench spot. He hit .273 in his 86 plate appearances for Boston last season, but that came with zero homers and a .325 slugging percentage.
  • BOS 3rd Baseman #11
Rafael Devers will undergo an MRI on Saturday and probably won’t play against this season.
Devers has been limited by his right shoulder for weeks, and it looks like he’s finally calling it with the Red Sox essentially done. Boston could finish out the season with Nick Sogard and Romy Gonzalez at third and give Vaughn Grissom a brief look at second.
  • BOS Shortstop #75
Nick Sogard went 1-for-2 with an RBI single in a loss to the Mets on Tuesday.
There wasn’t much to write home about for the Red Sox offense today, but Sogard was one of the brighter spots. The 26-year-old has seen more playing time at second base since David Hamilton went down with an injury, and while he may not produce tons of fantasy goodness, regular playing time would put him on the deep league radar.
