Three weeks ago owner Hal Steinbrenner revealed that the Yankees and Robinson Cano had some discussions about a long-term contract extension and today general manager Brian Cashman told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com that “a significant offer” has been made to the second baseman.
Cashman didn’t disclose any further details and it’s probably worth noting that, say, $75 million would certainly qualify as “a significant offer” without really having any chance of getting Cano locked up long term.
So basically all we know is that the two sides are deep enough into discussions that dollar figures are actually being put on the table. And that’s a change from three weeks ago, if nothing else.
