White Sox release Mitchell Boggs

The White Sox announced -- via Facebook and other outlets -- that they have released right-hander Mitchell Boggs, who signed a minor league contract with the Pale Hose in early February and had been competing for a bullpen job this spring in camp.

Boggs was one of the best setup men in baseball in 2012 and opened the 2013 season as the Cardinals’ primary closer, but he blew a bunch of early save opportunities and was traded to the Rockies in July for international signing money. He showed some promise at the end of last season in Colorado, but the struggles returned this spring in the Cactus League.

Boggs allowed nine earned runs on 11 hits in 6 1/3 innings this spring for the White Sox.

The 30-year-old native of Dalton, Georgia will try to latch on with a new team.
