The Orioles offer Kevin Gregg two years, $8-10 million

Kevin Gregg

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have offered reliever Kevin Gregg between $8-10 million a year for a two-year deal. (note: Yikes! Sorry for scaring you people. It’s that much for both years, not each year).

Gregg is OK, but nothing special, having saved 37 games in 43 chances last year. He is by no means a mortal lock when he comes to close out a game, but he has a good strikeout rate and is durable. Like a lot of the moves the O’s are making, this is a lower risk move. A guy with no super upside, but no super downside.

More interesting is the matter of who closes, assuming Gregg accepts the offer. The Orioles just re-signed Koji Uehara yesterday, and he did a pretty good job as the closer down the stretch. And Mike Gonzalez, though on the outs after his injury-filled and often ineffective year, is still owed a good deal of money for 2011.
