MLB.com’s Jesse Sanchez and Ken Gurnick report that the Dodgers fired “a significant portion of their international scouting department” yesterday.
Included in the sackings were vice president of international scouting Bob Engle as well as the club’s scouting coordinator in Latin America, scouting coordinator in the Dominican Republic, its director of international and Minor League relations, a special advisor for international player performance, a senior manager of international scouting; and a Latin America field coordinator.
As Sanchez and Gurnick note, the Dodgers have been aggressive in Latin American in the past couple of years but they also have made so many signings that they have gone over their international signing cap and will be unable to sign international prospects for more than $300,000 over the next two signing periods.
Whether these firings were a punishment for that in some way or just an acknowledgment that, for the next couple of years, international activity will be low is unknown. But it’s certainly a Monday massacre for the Dodgers.
