On Sunday, the White Sox inked outfielder Austin Jackson to a one-year, $5 million contract, bolstering their outfield. To make room for Jackson on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder Mike Olt for assignment. Olt cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte.
It seems like a typical roster move, but something very statistically unlikely has happened. You see, a Chicago team had previously acquired Jackson and designated Olt for assignment to create roster space. Olt must be feeling like it’s Groundhog’s Day.
The 27-year-old was once a highly-touted prospect in the Rangers’ system but hasn’t been able to do much at the major league level. He owns a career .580 OPS in 400 big league plate appearances spread out over parts of three seasons. Olt will serve as corner infield depth with the White Sox.
